Cryptozoology

Hi Folks,

To kick of the first real post here we go with Cryptozoology, defined as :

Cryptozoology (from Greek: κρυπτός, kryptós, "hidden"; ζôιον, zôion, "animal"; and λόγος, logos, "knowledge" or "study" – c.f. zoology) is the search for animals hypothesized to exist, but for which conclusive proof is missing. The field also includes the search for known animals believed to be extinct.

Now if you had a look at my profile you will see I list it as one of my interests, so do I believe in creatures such as BigFoot / Loch Ness Monster etc ?

Well actually .... No. I still have an open mind but as of yet I have seen nothing that would suggest to me they exist, if you know of evidence PLEASE let me know. What I find fascinating about this area is what it can tell us about US as human beings, that need for some mystery in life especially now we live in a society where there is really little left for the average person to discover ... Apart from kowledge of course, but that is not quite the same.

It also intrigues me just to see all the theories and what people are willing to say.

Here is a great piece from Penn and Teller, where they set out to look at Cyptozoology ( Strong language ) :

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

I just love the way they take things apart, might not be the most scientific of debunking but it definately the most entertaining :)

So am I believer or sceptic ?

Well without doubt there are many creatures yet to be discovered, however most of these will probably just be small worms and such :) As far as the more famous ones go ( Big Foot, Loch Ness Monster etc ) I have to say on the ballance of evidence I do not believe they exist.

The main problem is the amount of rubbish being posted as sightings and other evidence that is being published on the internet. A quick trawl through any community will turn up a lot of examples of 'evidence' that has previously ( sometimes by several years ) been proved to be wrong ... But they are still being used. The other problem is that a lot of things are being taken from films / documentaries which have used the latest CG to produce great effects, short snippets are then used and posted as genuine. Have a look through YouTube and search for Cryptozoology .... I did not find anything there that was new or interesting. The only thing that did intrigue me was some of the comments ... Surely people arn't that stupid ????

Wishing you all the best.

Richard
